"Don't let anyone convince you to give up, even yourself."
If you could paint anywhere, what and where would you paint?
Wow, I just have to pick one? Los Mallos de Riglos, above the village of Aguero, near Huesca, Aragon-Spain. (I have a photo of this place on a Spain calender and it looks like a dream) Last year I had the opportunity to travel for the first time internationally when I visited Bulgaria, France, Belgium and the Netherlands so I think any new place abroad for me would be inspiring, but visiting Spain is at the top of my list.
How do you start a painting and when do you know it's finished?
My paintings usually start with me wandering through my still life props or walking around looking for a scene in which the light, color and movement grabs ahold of me. When I can see it in paint, that's how I choose my subject. The painting is finished when I feel that I have captured what grabbed me with the understanding and energy that I possess, and hopefully without killing the paint.
Are there any artists or movements that influenced your current direction?
I am always looking to other artists so the list could go on and on. Contemporary influences are Sherrie McGraw and David Leffel. The awe-inspiring historical influences are of course: Rubens, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Soren-Emil Carlson, Inness, Raeburn, Alfred Stevens and Giovanni Boldini.
Which Old Masters products do you enjoy using and why?
I have consistently used the Flemish Maroger for the last few years. I have tried numerous mediums and there is nothing out there like it. It feels right moving in and out of my paint, and flowing off the tip of my brush. It gives a fluidity to the paint without being too liquidy, sticky or plastic feeling. It sets up in a way that I like, so that after a few hours of working I can do some pseudo scumbling and glazing over the still wet paint without disturbing what's underneath which creates beautiful jewel-like layers.
Lastly, any words of advice for aspiring artists?
Look to those who've come before you, be open to your own instincts and resources, study nature deeply and don't let anyone convince you to give up, even yourself.
